ASSESSMENT LITERACY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL BIOLOGY TEACHERS IN OWERRI MUNICIPAL COUNCIL, IMO STATE


This study examined assessment literacy among secondary school biology teachers in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State. The population of secondary school biology teachers in the Owerri Municipal Council is 55. Fifty-five biology teachers in Owerri Municipal Council were enumerated for the study. Four research questions guided the study's conduct. A-16 16-item structured questionnaire titled “Literacy Assessment of Biology Teachers Questionnaire” (LABTQ) was developed by the researchers to collect data from the respondents. The reliability coefficient of 0.74 was established through the test-retest method. Data were analysed using mean rating scores to answer the research questions and a z-test to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Most biology teachers in Owerri municipal are competent in assessing students’ entry behavior and the specific objectives of the lesson taught. However, most teachers are not competent in using questioning and quizzes to teach and learn biology effectively. The study recommended that school administrators organise workshops and seminars on assessment literacy for teachers for effective instructional delivery.
